Barbara M. Bistransin, a resident of 26 Woodbine Drive, Greenville, PA since 1981, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018.

Mrs. Bistransin was born July 30, 1929 in Joliet, IL to William J. Bonacce and Barbara Kathryn Hauber Bonacce. Barbara was a graduate of Academy High School, Erie PA. She met her husband Peter in Erie as both worked for United Way agencies. They married at Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Church in October, 1955.

As they raised their seven children, the Bistransins moved around the state of Pennsylvania as they pursued Pete's career with the Boy Scouts of Amercia. They lived in Erie, Harrisburg, Milton, Clarks Summit, and Greenville, PA. After 55 years of marriage Pete died in 2011 in Greenville. While living near Bloomsburg State University, Barbara decided to gain a teaching degree which she earned in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Comprehensive Social Studies, Secondary Level. Later she earned a Master's Degree of Science in Reading Education at Marywood University and a secondary English certification from Indiana University of PA. Barbara taught in many PA schools: Diocese of Scranton Catholic schools, Scranton and Conneaut School Districts, and Jeff Tech of Reynoldsville, PA. She also served as an addiction counselor for the Residential Program of the Salvation Army of Scranton, PA.

Mrs. Bistransin was a member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church having served as eucharistic minister, lector, and music minister for monthly mass at White Cliff Nursing Home. As a community volunteer Barbara served 15 years at Horizon UPMC as a patient visitor and gift shop worker. Avid for outdoor activities she joined local groups for hiking, biking, golf, and bowling. She was a member of the Greenville Business and Professional Women's Club, Greenville Photography Club, and PSAR Retired Teacher's Club. She was a member of the Serra Club of Mercer County. After retirement Barbara and her husband Pete did much traveling especially to visit their children and grandchildren. A highlight of their various travels was a trip to Isreal in 1997 with an ecumenical group from Sharon. Mrs. Bistransin also accompanied for her husband to dinners and events for the BSA and Rotary Clubs.

Survivors include the children, Cat Bistransin, New York, NY; Rebecca Bistransin, Greenville; Lieutenant Colonel Peter M. Bistransin and his wife Susan, Crofton, MD; James Bistransin, San Marcos, TX; John Bistransinand his wife Beth of Allen, TX; Mark Bistransinand his wife Dottie of Leonardtown, MD; and Daniel Bistransin of Stoughton, MA. Seven grandchildren; Ashley, Katie, Christa, Stephanie, Cooper, Jacob, and Maggie. There are also nieces and nephews from both families. She lived with her son Peter in Crofton, Maryland for the last year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and her brother, William J. Bonace of Mansfield, OH.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Building Fund, 85 N. High St., Greenville, PA 16125 or the Salvation Army.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.
